Recreation Committee Minutes August 9, 2005
Sunapee Recreation Committee
Minutes: August 9, 2005

Present: Deb McGrath, Scott Blewitt, Paul Skarin, Patricia Halpin, Chuck Weinstein, Mike Emmonds, Chris Williams

Meeting was called to order at 7:03.

1.      Minutes were accepted as written.
2.      Scott reported :
a.      All expenses are within the budget. A backboard was purchased for the beach.
b.      FisherCats baseball tickets are available for sale for August 20th for $10 each. A flyer is posted.
c.      We need to purchases another set of soccer goals. Scott will check on a specific size needed. We voted to appropriate no more than $1300 for their purchase.
d.      Fall Soccer is well organized. Because of the close team numbers, Scott will call past participants.  He will make a decision on additional teams if numbers warrant their need. Teams will begin on August 20th.  There was a discussion about a kickboard for Veteran’s field. Lumber Barn would donate materials and Foremost builders would construct it. We have concerns about the advertising placed on such an item. Chuck will investigate for the possibility of lumber or concrete for the kickboard.
e.      Scott ordered 12 ‘Dewey beach’ T shirts to be sold at store.
f.      Scott will have a quote for resurfacing and painting the outdoor basketball court for our next meeting.
g.      Decisions on the skateboard park will be held for more evaluation.
h.      We are waiting for engraving on the Milewski bench to be placed at Veteran’s field.
3.      Beach Update:
a.      Scott Unsworth reported that things went well at the beach with the new schedule from last month, extending the hours. We will have enough beach staff until closing on Monday, September 6th. The use of the kayaks can be checked through the ‘sign out’ registration.
b.      We discussed concerns with the swim lessons for next year concerning times for classes and student/ instructor ratio. There is concern that the instructors are not demonstrating in the water for students. It was suggested that classes start at 10 am and end by 4 pm. Instructors found some students lacking skill for the levels they were placed.
c.      Patricia will follow up on pictures for the store area.
d.      Scott B. will get 3 quotes for updating the electrical system and 3 quotes for finishing the interior of the beach house.
e.      Plantings need to be in the Fall.
f.      There was a long discussion about drop offs at the beach and the possibility of an additional swim line from neighboring property. Paul will check into mooring regulations, boat approach to swim areas and swim lines.
g.      We need to redo signs for posting staffing times at the beaches.
h.      Discussed the possibility of recognizing the 60th anniversary of Dewey Beach area.
4 .Paul informed us that the Lions were looking for a project.  Deb will look into the status of building another field at the Seven Hearth’s area. We discussed our need to increase field space as a priority. We also addressed our concerns about having a full time recreation director.

Meeting was adjourned at 9:05

Respectfully submitted,
Chris Williams
